We’re hosting a special site visit to the Acheen Street Mosque compound with Puan Habibi Nourain Alisyaki, the great-great-granddaughter of Sheikh Omar Basheer Al-Khalidee.
If you know your Penang history, Sheikh Omar Basheer was the influential 19th-century Imam and scholar who helped defuse and bring peace during the 1867 Penang Riots.
Puan Habibi will be walking us through the compound and sharing family oral stories passed down through generations—including what it was like growing up in Lebuh Acheh back when the area was known as "Second Jeddah" (the main departure point for Hajj pilgrims in the region).
After the walk, she’s hosting our group for a home-cooked Jawi Peranakan lunch featuring Nasi Tomato and Ayam Ros. (And yes, Puan Habibi pointed out that true Jawi Peranakan Nasi Tomato has a completely different spice profile compared to the usual Malay style—you’ll get to taste the difference yourself!).
Best of all, we’ll be eating inside her ancestral 200-year-old family home, built by Sheikh Omar Basheer himself.
