The craft behind the paper

Featured in Nikkei Asia’s “Built to burn: Penang’s paper effigies enter the art world,” the workshop is run by father-and-son team Koh Ah Bah and Koh Eng Keat, also known as Sam Koh. Their work transforms paper and delicate bertam palm frames into elaborate offerings connected with Chinese Taoist ancestor worship.

From replicas of everyday objects to detailed houses, these creations bring together craftsmanship, remembrance and belief. The article also explores how Koh Eng Keat connects this traditional craft with contemporary music and performance through his band, LING.

This shop visit offers an opportunity to encounter a living Penang craft and appreciate the cultural stories behind objects traditionally made to be burned as offerings.
